Tips for Achieving the Right Scent Intensity in Candles

Posted on April 19, 2023

  1. Use the Right Amount of Fragrance Oil: One of the most important factors in achieving the right scent intensity in candles is to use the right amount of fragrance oil. Too little and the scent won't be noticeable, too much and it can be overwhelming. As a general rule of thumb, use around 6-10% fragrance oil for soy wax candles, and 10-12% for paraffin wax candles.

  2. Consider the Type of Wax: Different waxes have different fragrance holding capacities. Soy wax, for example, tends to hold fragrance oils better than paraffin wax. Be sure to choose a wax that's compatible with the fragrance oil you're using to ensure optimal scent throw.

  3. Use High-Quality Fragrance Oils: The quality of the fragrance oil you use can also impact the scent intensity. Opt for high-quality fragrance oils from reputable suppliers to ensure a strong, long-lasting scent.

  4. Wick Selection: The wick size you choose can also affect the scent throw. A wick that's too small may not burn hot enough to release the fragrance, while a wick that's too large can produce too much heat and burn through the wax too quickly. It's important to select the right wick size for the diameter of your candle.

  5. Curing Time: Allowing your candles to cure for a few days after pouring can also improve the scent intensity. This gives the fragrance oil time to fully bind with the wax and allows the scent to mature.

  6. Room Size: Keep in mind the size of the room where the candle will be used. A smaller room will require less scent intensity than a larger room, so adjust your fragrance oil amount accordingly.

  7. Burn Time: The length of time you burn your candle can also impact scent intensity. Burn your candle for long enough to allow the wax to melt fully across the top of the container. This ensures that the fragrance oil is evenly distributed throughout the wax and maximizes scent throw.
