Baths salts are and easy and fun product to make at home and can be customised in so many different ways. Start with our basic base recipe and substitute your favourite oils, fragrances and botanicals to whatever suits your needs.
Epsom salts are widely used in bath preparations for their detoxifying properties and ability to soften water. These salts release sulfate ions and magnesium when dissolved, and is believed to relieve muscle tension as it is absorbed into the skin.
These wonderful salts are widely used for consumption and bathing. Himalayan salt is said to soothe the skin, regulate blood flow and exfoliate the skin. Containing 84 trace minerals including iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium, this salt is a great one to add to any bath recipe.
Dead Sea Salt is well known for its exfoliating and therapeutic benefits.
It is used for relaxation & skin conditioning, but is also widely known for its detoxifying, healing, and restoring properties. It contains 60% less sodium chloride than normal sea salt.
The addition of baking soda to your bath salt recipe is for its hydrophilic properties. Baking soda will help absorb the essential oils in your mix, helping it to keep smelling great for longer and also to help dispersing them in the bath.
This is an optional ingredient depending on what you are trying to create. Carrier oils can be nourishing and very moisturising for the skin so if you are adding them to your salts be careful no to add too much. You may also want to add around 2% of polysorbate 80 to help the oils and any colour you use to disperse in the water.
Again these are optional. They can make your salts look that little bit more attractive and luxurious and certainly give your bath that luxurious look and feel.
Dried flowers like lavender and rosemary can help leave your skin feeling hydrated and revitalised whilst creating feelings of positive energy and wellness.
You can use any of your favourites in any combination that suits you but make sure you do your due diligence on each one. Some essential oils can not be applied topically directly to the skin and others may cause skin irritation. Combining your essential oils with a carrier oil in your salts will help protect the skin form coming into direct contact with the essential oils.
Note: Always do a skin test before making and using any product. Adjust any quantities to suit your particular needs and skin conditions. ACS accepts no responsibility for any outcomes relating to formulas or recipes. Use at your own discretion.
