Why SoyaLuna Needs Smaller Wicks than GW 464

1. Why SoyaLuna Needs Smaller Wicks than GW 464

The wick size is determined not just by the jar diameter, but by the burn characteristics of the wax. Compared to Golden Brands 464 (a 100% soy container wax), SoyaLuna contains paraffin in its blend. That single factor changes almost everything:

  • Paraffin burns “easier” than soy: It liquefies and vaporises at a lower temperature and requires less energy from the flame. That means the flame does not need to be as large or as hot to maintain an adequate melt pool.

  • Lower melt point (42–48 °C): SoyaLuna softens and melts quicker than GW 464, which is typically around 46–49 °C. Even a slightly lower melt point reduces the work the wick has to do.

  • Improved fuel flow: Paraffin content creates a thinner, less viscous melt pool compared to straight soy. That lets the wick draw liquid fuel more efficiently, again lowering the need for a larger wick.

So when you test SoyaLuna side by side with GW 464 in the same container, you’ll find that a wick that works well in GW 464 will almost always burn too hot and too large in SoyaLuna. That’s why the “suggested wick size” chart tends to look one size smaller.

2. Blend Properties Driving Wick Behaviour

Several characteristics of SoyaLuna reinforce the smaller wick requirement:

  • Superior glass adhesion: Less airflow tunnelling along the sides means the flame doesn’t need to overcompensate.

  • Minimal mushrooming: The paraffin balance improves combustion efficiency. Less carbon build-up means the wick can be smaller without clogging or suffocating.

  • Fragrance oil compatibility: Paraffin enhances hot throw, so the wick doesn’t need to run as hot to deliver the same level of fragrance release.

3. Why This Matters for Candle Makers

From a maker’s perspective, this is actually a benefit. Smaller wicks:

  • Reduce soot and smoke.

  • Increase burn time per candle.

  • Lower the risk of overheating glass containers.

  • Improve fragrance retention by avoiding an unnecessarily deep melt pool.

Put simply: SoyaLuna is engineered to make your wick’s job easier.

👉 In practical terms: if you’re used to wicking GW 464 jars, start with at least one size smaller wick in SoyaLuna for the same diameter vessel, then test burn and adjust as needed.
