Why Soy Candles Sometimes Frost — And Why It’s Completely Normal

Posted on May 28, 2026

One of the most common questions we get from beginner candle makers is:

“Why has my candle gone white and crystal-looking on the top and sides?”

The answer?

It’s called frosting.

And despite what social media may sometimes tell you… frosting is NOT necessarily a bad thing.

In fact, frosting is often one of the biggest signs you are working with a natural soy wax.

So… What Actually IS Frosting?

Frosting is the visible crystal growth that can appear in soy wax as it cools and cures.

It may show up as:

  • white crystal patterns

  • marbled-looking patches

  • slightly rough surfaces

  • “snowflake” style textures

  • lighter patches on the sides of the candle

Sometimes it is subtle.

Sometimes it can be quite dramatic.

This happens because soy wax is a natural vegetable wax and it naturally wants to form crystals as it cools.

Unlike paraffin wax, soy is not a perfectly uniform synthetic product. It is far more “alive” in the way it behaves.

That means small cosmetic changes are simply part of working with a natural wax.

Frosting Does NOT Mean Your Candle Is Bad

This is the important part.

Frosting is cosmetic.

It does NOT automatically mean:

  • the candle will burn badly

  • the scent throw will be poor

  • the wax is faulty

  • you did something wrong

In many cases, a beautifully burning candle can frost slightly.

And sometimes the candles with the smoothest tops are actually the poorer performers.

A candle’s performance always matters more than achieving a perfectly Instagram-flat top.

At Aussie Candle Supplies, we would much rather see customers making well-performing, properly tested candles than chasing unrealistic cosmetic perfection.

Why Does Frosting Happen More In Winter?

This is something many candle makers notice.

As the weather cools down, frosting often becomes more visible.

Why?

Because soy wax reacts heavily to temperature changes.

Cold rooms, cold benches and cold glassware can all cause the wax to cool too quickly or unevenly.

This encourages crystal formation.

You may especially notice frosting during:

  • autumn

  • winter

  • colder nights

  • air-conditioned environments

It is extremely common.

Things That Can Increase Frosting

While frosting is normal, there are some factors that can make it more noticeable.

Large Temperature Swings

Pouring warm wax into very cold jars can shock the wax during cooling.

Heavy Dyes

Dark colours often make frosting stand out more visibly.

Black candles are famous for this.

Cooling Too Quickly

Cold rooms, fans, open windows or stone benchtops can speed up cooling unevenly.

Certain Fragrances

Some fragrance oils can influence how soy wax crystallises.

Some oils remain beautifully smooth.

Others encourage more frosting.

This is normal and part of candle testing.

Can You Prevent Frosting Completely?

Honestly?

Not always.

And anyone claiming they can completely eliminate frosting from every soy candle forever is probably stretching the truth a bit.

You can REDUCE frosting.

You can IMPROVE consistency.

But natural soy wax will always behave naturally.

That is part of its character.

Things That MAY Help Reduce Frosting

Pouring Into Slightly Warmer Jars

Not hot.

Just not freezing cold.

Avoiding Sudden Cooling

Try not to place freshly poured candles near drafts, open windows or very cold surfaces.

Slower Cooling Conditions

A more stable room temperature often helps produce a more even finish.

Lighter Colours

Lighter wax colours usually hide frosting far better than darker tones.

Testing Different Soy Waxes

Some soy waxes naturally frost more than others.

Different blends behave differently.

This is one reason testing matters so much in candle making.

The Reality Of Natural Soy Wax

Natural waxes are not plastic.

They move.

They react.

They crystallise.

And honestly, that is part of what many people actually love about soy candles.

The candle looks handmade because it IS handmade.

Perfectly uniform candles often come from highly refined synthetic blends designed specifically for cosmetic consistency.

Natural soy wax behaves differently.

And that is okay.

Our Advice?

Do not obsess over chasing cosmetic perfection.

Focus on:

  • proper wick testing

  • good scent throw

  • safe burning

  • quality jars

  • proper curing

  • consistent pouring practices

A candle that burns beautifully and smells amazing is always more important than one tiny frosted patch on the side of the glass.

Because at the end of the day…

People light candles for the experience — not to inspect them under a microscope.

At Aussie Candle Supplies, we are huge believers in education over perfection.

Soy wax is natural.

Natural products behave naturally.

And sometimes that means a little frosting along the way.
