No, you don’t need a special licence to sell candles in Australia. Candle making is classed as a low-risk craft, so there’s no formal government licence required to start selling.
That said, there are a few important things you do need to have in place before you start selling to the public:
Your candles must be safe to use. This means testing every batch for wick stability, burn time, overheating, and container safety. Always ensure your wicks are correctly sized for the wax and vessel you’re using.
Every candle should have a warning label and clear burning instructions. This helps protect both you and your customer.
(Example: “Never leave a burning candle unattended. Trim wick to 5mm. Keep away from children, pets, and drafts.”)
If you’re selling regularly (online, markets, or wholesale), you’ll need an Australian Business Number (ABN). It’s free to apply and ensures your business is recognised legally for tax and insurance purposes.
We highly recommend having product and public liability insurance once you start selling. Candles involve heat and flame, so insurance protects you if something goes wrong.
Always describe your products accurately — for example, “100% soy wax” should mean the candle contains no blends or additives. This keeps you compliant with ACCC fair trading regulations.
In short:
You don’t need a licence to sell candles, but you do need to follow safety, labelling, and business guidelines to keep your customers safe and your business protected.
