Melting Skull Candles

 Feeling spooky? This spooky bleeding skull Halloween candle is sure to get you in the mood for the scary season! Skulls are partially hidden, slowly revealed as the candle burns lower, resulting in a beautiful red melt pool! Even novelty candles can use fun oils like Monkey Farts fragrance oil to add a burst of fruity sweetness.

                                                       What You’ll Need:

     Red Liquid Dye

 Method:

1. Using a large 283g Black Candle Tin, stick on a CDN 16 or ACS 8.5/9.0 wick using a stickum. Peel the backing off of the stickum, place the wick over the exposed side of the stickum, gently pull up and the wick and stickum will then be able to be placed into the centre of the tin, steady the wick by using a wick bar. Turning the candle over, add a warning label to the base.
2. Measure out 200g of a wax suitable for containers, I have used Soyaluna All Natural Wax, melt the wax up to 80 degrees. Add in 8% fragrance, which is 16ml, into your melted wax. You can melt the wax by either using an Aluminium Pouring Pot over a double boiler or melting the wax in the microwave. Ensure you monitor the wax, to ensure it does not burn or overheat!
3. Fill your tin up just over half way with this melted wax, once it reaches 65-70 degrees. Let it cool. Leave the remaining wax to the side, we will use this later.
4. In the meantime, heat up 50g of the same wax following the same heating and temperature guide, add in your fragrance and a few drops of red liquid dye until you reach your desired colour.  You can drop a little bit of wax onto a piece of paper and let it cool to see the colour of the wax!
5. We are only going to use one half of the 3D Skulls mould, however you can use the whole mould if you wish. I am only using half of this mould so that my skulls are flat on the back. Pour the wax into the half mould and let it cool.
6. Once the skull wax melts and your candle are set, you can reheat your remaining plain white wax back up to 80 degrees. Demould the skull melts and place them onto the top of the cooled candle in the tin.Using your heated wax, pour the remaining wax carefully into the tin, ensuring you do not pour over the faces of the skulls as this will turn white as the candle cools. Let the candle cool.  
7. Once the candle is completely set, you should see the faces of the skulls poking through, you can adjust the amount of wax you add in the second pour to change how much of the skulls heads you can see. Trim the wick down, your candle is now ready to burn!

Please note that these are just suggested measurements, you will need to conduct your own personal testing to find out the best wick to use as with each different dye, fragrance and wick you use, the burn will change! Lots of testing is always required during candle making!
