Essential Oils for Candle Making, Diffusers & Soap
Essential oils and fragrance oils are both popular choices for scenting candles, soaps, and diffusers but they are not the same thing. Understanding the difference helps you get the best results from your products.
Essential Oils are naturally derived from plants, flowers, and herbs through processes like steam distillation or cold pressing. They carry the true botanical scent of their source and are a popular choice for makers who prefer a natural, chemical-free product. However, essential oils can be more volatile at high temperatures, which means some may fade faster in candles compared to fragrance oils.
Fragrance Oils are synthetically crafted or blended scents designed specifically for candle and soap making. They are formulated to hold scent better at high temperatures, offering stronger and longer-lasting throw in candles.
Usage Rates For candles, essential oils are typically used at 3–6% of the total wax weight. Soap makers generally use 1–3% depending on skin sensitivity. For reed diffusers, a 15–25% dilution in a carrier or diffuser base is common.
Popular Essential Oil Scents Some of the most loved essential oils for candle and soap making include lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, orange sweet, and tea tree, each bringing a clean, natural aroma to your finished product.
